[Blind-stamped Binding] Lapide, Commentaria in Omnes Divi Pauli Epistolas, 1679
Cornelius á Lapide, Commentaria in Omnes Divi Pauli Epistolas, Jacob Meursius, Antwerp 1679
A beautiful blind-stamped pig skin over wooden boards binding, with elaborate floral stamped motifs. Later, serviceable clasps. Edges painted in red. Rubbed, spotted, slight patina as expected, but still bright in its colour. Lower board scuffed, as photographed. Scattered worming to boards. Internally, very good, with tearing to front and back endpapers, yellowing to pages varying in degree, as expected with age. Worming throughout, not affecting legibility.
Jacob Meursius’ renowned Ultima Editio of Cornelius á Lapide’s Great Commentary on the Epistles of Saint Paul. Lapide’s monumental commentaries are counted among the most important and influential works of Catholic exegesis. Lauded in Jesuit colleges, the work is a landmark of counter-Reformation biblical study. Neat pen ownership inscription to title page of "G. Boos" in early hand.
In all a wonderful example in such a unique and desirable binding.
Collation: *4, A6-Llll6, Mmmm8, Nnnn6-Tttt6, Vvvv4. Pp. 976 & prelim & addenda. That is, Complete.
